Polymer-Based Coating for Steel Protection, Highlighting Metal–Organic Framework as Functional Actives: A Review

Polymer-based coatings are a long-established category of protective for metals and alloys regarding corrosion inhibition. The polymer films can degrade, when coated on metallic substrates, the degradation facilitates moisture oxygen penetration, reducing film’s adhesion to substrate exposing extreme conditions capable corrosion. For this reason, pigments, inhibitors, other compatible blends added coating formulations enhance protection. To prevent possible deterioration inhibitor-spiked coatings, inhibitors encapsulated through diverse techniques avoid leakage provide controlled release in response trigger. This review discusses polymer-based performance corrosion-causing environments protect metals, focusing more commercial steels, readily available construction-relevant material used extensive applications. It further beams searchlight advances made that employ metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as functional additives. MOFs possess tailorable structure metal ions organic linkers have large loading capacity, which is crucial inhibitor delivery. Results from reviewed works show barrier protection against ingress corrosive species offer chance add several functions enhancing their anti-corrosion properties.
